New home for Fashionese Daily

by Thomas Arie Setiawan — February 6, 2008

Last week, I was very busy helping Fashionese Daily on its server problem. Before we redesigned the site, this site already got a huge amount of traffic. After the redesign, the traffic is increasing very fast. This situation triggered a new problem: a server problem. Here are some stories:

Background

Before having its own virtual private server, Fashionese Daily was hosted on a shared hosting server. Because of a high server load, some problems occurred -- like Internal Server Error, not responsive site, and also error on the database connection. For your information, Fashionese Daily (blog, forum, and directory) handles almost around 800,000 - 1,000,000 pageviews per month, in the last couple of months. During the busy hour, there are around 150 online users in the forum.

Hanzky (Fashionese Daily owner) talked to me. We discussed the best solution for these problems. The community grows, so does the problems. So, for few days, we talked and made a new strategy to overcome this problem. And a virtual private server came as decision. After having the server setup, it was my turn to handle the transfer.

Let the fun begin...

When I got the server account, I looked around the server environment. Checking whether all modules and configurations can meet all application requirements. And we started transferring files from (old) server to (new) server. All process went smoothly. I decided to move the database after we're really ready to move host. But, it seems that I need to do that sooner because the old host already suspended the account. Luckily, I can still access the host including the database. Exporting database from command line, server-to-server transfer, importing database form command line... everything runs without problem. Woohhooo!!

The new server was ready, but not the domain. I have to wait the domain transfer first and manage the DNS first. I have to wait because I could not create new nameservers and change the domain DNS. During this process, I checked again the application settings: adjusting the path, configuration, etc. Now, Fashionese Daily is on its own virtual private server... And I we're here look closely for the server. Yiihhhhhhaaaaaaaaaa!
